Graded and ungraded adjectives

Pattern 6: as ADJ as cl

The adjective follows as and is followed by as and a finite clause. This pattern is used to compare two people or things, or to compare someone or something with a former situation or a possible situation.
His feelings are not as abnormal as they appear.
He's not as dumb as he acts.
The unions are not as popular as they once were.
He needs an independent woman who's as tough as he is.
Sometimes this pattern is used to indicate that someone or something has a lot of a quality. For example, as happy as a girl can be means roughly the same as extremely happy.
Pass me some of that there cornbread, and I'll be as happy as a girl can be.
The finite clause sometimes includes an adjective. In this case the pattern is used to compare how much of two qualities someone or something has.
A workout in the gym builds a body that is as powerful as it is beautiful.
