  • Note that in the numbers 21, 31, 41 and so on, the final vowel of venti, trenta and quaranta is lost: ventuno, trentuno, quarantuno. The same thing happens with the numbers 28, 38, 48 and so on: ventotto, trentotto, quarantotto. When tre is combined with another number it takes an accent: trentatré (33), centotré (103), milletré (1003).

1  uno, un or una?

  • In Italian the same word – uno – is used for the number one and the indefinite article a.
  • When using uno as a number in front of a noun, follow the same rules as for the indefinite article.

  • When replying to a question, use uno if what’s referred to is masculine, and
    una if it’s feminine.
Quanti giorni? – Uno.How many days? – One.
Quante notti? – Una.How many nights? – One.
  • Use uno when counting, unless referring to something or someone feminine.
  • Do NOT use un to translate one hundred, or one thousand.

  • You do use un with milione (meaning million) and miliardo (meaning thousand million).
Quante persone? – Un milione.How many people? – One million.

  • Note that when un milione and un miliardo are followed by a noun, di is added.

2  Which numbers have plurals?

  • The only numbers which have plurals are mille, milione, and miliardo. Due, tre, quattro and so on are added to mila to make duemila (meaning two thousand), tremila (meaning three thousand) and quattromila (meaning four thousand).

3  Full stop or comma?

  • Use a full stop, not a comma, to separate thousands and millions in figures.

  • Use a comma instead of a decimal point to show decimals in Italian.
0,5 (zero virgola cinque)0.5 (nought point five)

  • To make the others, take numbers such as venti and trentotto, drop the final vowel and add esimo. If the number ends in tre, DON’T drop the final e before adding esimo.

  • These numbers are adjectives and can be made masculine or feminine, singular or plural.

  • Note that when writing these numbers in figures you should use a little o, or a, depending on whether what’s referred to is masculine or feminine.

  • Roman numerals are often used for centuries, popes and monarchs.
