ADJ in n

The 'comparable' group

These adjectives indicate that two or more things are similar or different.
These adjectives are reciprocal adjectives. That is, they are typically used with a plural noun group as Subject, or they are used in a pattern with from, to, or with, as shown below. We include here unanimous, which has a plural noun group as Subject.
Mars and Sirius may be comparable in brilliance, but Sirius scintillates with a multitude of colours, while Mars glows steadily with a hue somewhere between yellow and red.
The three titles are quite different in style and content, but all come highly recommended.
The two of them are very similar in physique, temperament and style of racing.
The students are unanimous in their desire to increase government spending on education and to employ more teachers and administrative staff.

  • If the Subject is not a plural noun group, comparable is typically used with a prepositional phrase beginning with to or with; different is used with a prepositional phrase beginning with to or from; identical and similar are used with a prepositional phrase beginning with to; the same is used with a prepositional phrase beginning with as. These patterns are ADJ in n as n, ADJ in n from n, and ADJ in n to n.
    Saint Brides' church with its billowing arches is really quite different in mood from the calmer interior of St Phillip's.
    At 68 metres, this airship was similar in length to a Jumbo jet.
