Combining forms

Combining forms combine with other words to form compound words, usually written with a hyphen. Most combining forms are used to make adjectives. These adjectives are labelled COMB in the Collins Cobuild English Dictionary. The adjective formed may be graded or ungraded. In the lists below we indicate the combining forms which make graded adjectives.We also include in this section adjectives which typically combine with adverbs, for example well-groomed, sparsely furnished. They are labelled adv ADJ in the Collins Cobuild English Dictionary. Adjectives that are formed in this way are graded or ungraded, depending on whether the adverb is graded or ungraded. In the lists below we indicate the adjectives that are always used with graded adverbs.We deal below with two types of combining form:
