Combining forms

The '-challenged' group

Most of these combining forms combine with adverbs, and -impaired combines with nouns. The adjectives formed indicate that someone has a particular ability or disability. Many people find the form -handicapped offensive, and -disabled is not acceptable in all contexts.
£2,119,000 is being spent on facilities for people who are physically challenged including wheelchair hire and accessible toilets.
For deaf and hearing-impaired viewers, the frustration is even greater.
