The 'English' group

These adjectives indicate that someone or something is typical of a place or time, or is like the work, ideas, or behaviour of a famous person. This use is very productive: any adjective which indicates a place or a person can be used in this way. We list below some adjectives of this type, but none of these is at all frequent.
There's something very English about the tradition of watercolour.
Mr Hannah insisted there was nothing Machiavellian about the control of information from the ship.
There is something unavoidably Shakespearean about all this.
