The 'inches' group

These nouns refer to units of measurement. They are used to indicate that someone or something is relatively close to someone or something else.
Zlotin dropped the pistol and, using the side of his foot, swept it across the floor to within inches of Graham's feet.
The noun sometimes follows a number or a determiner such as a few.
Her parents, her younger sister Anita and her grandparents live within a few miles of each other.
If the noun follows one or a it is used in the singular.
A grey squirrel scuttled up a treetrunk within a yard of him.
The noun inches is sometimes used to indicate that someone almost does something.
A spokesperson for his office says: 'We are within inches of getting something done.'
