The 'deep' group

These adjectives are used to indicate how big something is. See also amount ADJ in 'Other related patterns' below.
The grass was knee high.
In the case of deep, the adjective is sometimes followed by a prepositional phrase beginning with in. This pattern is n ADJ in n.
The track ahead was ankle deep in mud but we could wait no longer.
