Grammar Patterns

with N

Productive uses

1 A large number of nouns are used with this pattern after another noun as a way of describing someone or something. If the noun in this pattern is a singular count noun, the noun group begins with a determiner as in a car with a broken windscreen. If the noun is an uncount noun or a plural noun, the noun group does not begin with a determiner, as in girls with long hair, players with talent, and people with disabilities.
2 Prepositional phrases beginning with with are used to indicate what is used to do something, as in Cut it with a sharp knife.
