The 'months' group

These nouns refer to a period of time. They are used to indicate that something happens a relatively short time after something else.
The pen nib deteriorates very quickly and I've often thrown them away within days.
Graham was awake within seconds of the telephone ringing.
The noun sometimes follows a number or a determiner such as a few.
Only a quarter of women returned to work within nine months of giving birth.
If the noun follows one or a it is used in the singular.
The last years of her life were as hard as the early ones, and she died, alone in France. Within a year one of her sons also died in India.
