Many nouns are sometimes preceded by nouns which indicate, for example, what something is made of (as in a cardboard box), where something is (as in a hilltop village), or when something happens (as in an evening concert). These productive noun-noun combinations are dealt with in Section 12.The nouns listed here are ones which are always or typically preceded by another noun.In the lists below, we often give a noun in brackets after the listed noun. This is a noun that typically occurs before the listed noun. Many of these combinations, like shop assistant and blood donor, are frequent enough to be termed compound nouns.
