These nouns refer to places.
This use is very productive. The pattern is used with noun groups referring to places of many kinds, for example out of the country and out of their homes.
I'd like to put it all behind me, but I've achieved nothing since I came out of prison.
I was out of town at the time, so I don't know exactly how it happened.
