Graded and ungraded adjectives

The 'awful' and 'superb' group

These adjectives indicate that someone or something is judged to be good or bad. Adjectives such as perfect, superb, and tremendous, which indicate that something is extremely good, are not graded with adverbs such as fairly or very, but they are graded with adverbs such as really or as. Adjectives such as awful and terrible, which indicate that something is extremely bad, are not graded with adverbs such as very, though they are graded with adverbs such as fairly.
His behaviour could be fairly awful.
