The 'request' group

These nouns refer to requests. When the to-infinitive is active, in most cases someone is asking someone else to do something. However, in the case of application, and sometimes demand and request, someone is asking to be allowed to do something themselves.
Shots were heard after Jones ignored appeals to surrender.
The 22-year-old's demand to be allowed to leave will now be put before the club's board of directors.

  • In the case of appeal, injunction, invitation, and warning, the noun is sometimes followed by a prepositional phrase beginning with to and a to-infinitive clause. This pattern is N to n to-inf.
    Her father gave a moving warning to other parents to be aware of what their children were up to.
