Colour words

The 'chocolate' group

These words indicate that something is the same colour as some other substance or thing, often a food, a plant, an animal's coat, or a stone.
He had chocolate eyes, thick, curly hair, and a bushy black moustache.
Driving down through the foothills to the coast, our road threads its way through an emerald valley of great scenic beauty to reach the Black Sea.
She re-emerged after lunch in what the journalists eventually agreed was an oatmeal cardigan.
Sometimes a colour word of this type has a fixed meaning, even though the thing itself can be a variety of colours. For example, lilac always means pale purple, even though lilac flowers are sometimes white.
Sophie was wearing lilac, a crepe wool dress with a hat to match.
