MODAL

The modal verb is used by itself or with just not following it, when confirming or contradicting a statement, in short answers to questions, or following comparatives (see AUX in Section 1 above). All the modal verbs except dare and need are used in this pattern.
His mother could no more relax than he could.
'You'll never see it,' he said. 'Yes, he will,' said a voice.
