N for n

The 'catalyst' and 'death knell' group

These nouns refer to things that cause something to begin or come into being, or to come to an end.
But is hot weather really the catalyst for unsocial behaviour?
The clampdown on drink-driving has sounded the death knell for many isolated country pubs.
With most of these nouns, the preposition for is sometimes followed by an '-ing' clause.
That was the springboard for jumping into the restaurant business.
