The 'increase' group

These nouns are used to indicate that something is increasing or improving, or that it is decreasing or getting worse. On the up is used in British English to mean that something is improving ( see also meaning group 19 below.)
A study by the Worldwatch Institute says worldwide smoking is on the decline, but smoking in the Third World nations is increasing.
Crime is on the increase.
Midlands football is on the up again.
