Plural nouns

The 'shakes' group

These nouns refer to undesirable physical or mental states or symptoms, or to physical problems of some kind. Some of them are always or typically preceded by the: see Section 14, meaning group 43. (Agonies and cramps also occur in a singular form with no determiner.)
I had a lot of stomach cramps and chest cramps.
Hiccups are very common and perfectly natural.
It was such a shock I had hysterics.
Then I started getting the shakes.
