II.18 The 'react' group

These verbs are concerned with reacting or responding to something that has happened or been done.
One of the first world leaders to react to the news from Moscow was the British Prime Minister.
By the end of the second day, Sri Lanka, replying to Australia's 256, had made 265 for three wickets.

  • respond
  • The verbs react and respond also have the pattern V to n with n. The prepositional phrase beginning with with indicates what someone does in response to something.
    The government responded to the rebellion with the declaration of a state of emergency.
