Comparative adjectives

Pattern 8: ADJ-COMPAR than adj/-ed n

The comparative adjective is followed by than and an adjective or a past participle. This complete phrase acts as a single adjective and is followed by a noun. It is sometimes written with hyphens.
The chemicals sector had a good day yesterday as two companies reported better-than-expected figures.
Not surprisingly, his large upper torso has bigger than average lungs.
The long period of low rainfall in many districts will have resulted in drier-than-normal conditions in some gardens.
However, this does not mean that you need to wait for that long, especially if you are in an older-than-average age group.
