Graded and ungraded adjectives

Pattern 1: adv ADJ

The adjective follows a grading adverb. For lists of grading adverbs, see Part 2 above.
The city remained comparatively calm, but few of its residents were deceived.
Her fingers had become infuriatingly clumsy; she kept dropping hairpins and brushes.
The reality of cottage-buying is rather different.
The village school is uncommonly prosperous.
