The 'synonym' group

These nouns refer to a word or phrase. The prepositional phrase indicates the thing that the word or phrase refers to, or a word or phrase that it can be used to replace.
Today 'community' tends to be a synonym for 'marginalised social group', implying some measure of exclusivity.
The Greek word for amber is 'elektron', hence 'electricity'.
With all these nouns except nickname and pseudonym, the preposition for is sometimes followed by an '-ing' clause.
In my profession the term 'resting' is of course, a euphemism for being out of work.

  • This use is productive with nouns referring to languages, for example the Russian for cabbage.
    The French for twice is 'bis'.
    'Mari' is the Japanese for 'truth'.
