Nouns used in names

The 'Overture' group

These nouns are used in the names of musical compositions. They all have Pattern 1, and are often preceded by an ordinal, e.g. Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony. Sometimes they are followed by numbers, e.g. Prokofiev's Symphony No 6, or by a specific key, e.g. Stravinsky's Symphony in C, or by another prepositional phrase, e.g. Balanchine's Symphony in Three Movements.
Weber's imaginative and colourful harmonies came vividly alive in a sparkling performance of the Oberon Overture.
His fabulous recording of Elgar's Organ Sonata is still the model for us all.
