The verb can be used on its own, without anything following it. Verbs with this pattern are often called intransitive verbs.

Many verbs are used with this pattern only when something involved in the action, apart from the Subject, has already been mentioned or indicated. For example, in the case of refuse, you need to be told what someone refuses to do, as in A colleague urged him to see a psychiatrist, but he refused. Some verbs of this kind fit into one of the meaning groups below; the remainder are listed in section (ii) of the 'Verbs with other meanings' group.Verbs with this pattern belong to the following meaning groups:V is the second most frequent verb pattern in English after V n.The lists below contain only verbs which are among the 500 most frequently occurring verbs in the Bank of English. A typical Subject is indicated in brackets where this is helpful.Many verbs with the pattern pl-n V or pl-n V P are reciprocal verbs, which are described in Chapter 6 and are not included in this section.
